History of Food in Hawai'i
The Hawaiians lived off of a food system. This system helped organize the community and separate families into different contribters so that everyone could live in harmony. People were put into the groups based off of where you live in the ahupua'a. There were the maka'āinana who are the common people who worked as mahiʻai (farmers) and the lawaiʻa (fisherman). By having this system it kept everything running smoothly and didn't create any commotion throughout the community.
As time went on many different cultures have migrated to Hawai'i to try to make a living. These mixed cultures worked on the plantations. All cultural barriers were brought down when they all came here and grew their own crops. This was one of the staple points for Hawai'i's introduction to multi cultural foods. Some of the main crops back then were things like sugar cane, macadamia nuts, and coffee.

Food Responsibility
The first step to help ensure the production and security of food on our island is to grow our own food. For this to be sustainable, we would need many friends and family to participate. Setting up local gardens around the community would allow many individuals to have safe, healthy food. However, starting a garden that is continuously sustainable takes a lot of time and preparation. For this idea to be secure, we would need a handful of individuals willing to work and create sustainable land resources such as gardens, farms, and fresh water systems. Planting different crops at different times would allow us to cultivate our own crops yearly. There wouldn't be any time where crops aren't growing. To ensure that our crops are healthy, we would people to constantly take care of them. Another idea could be to set up some sort of trade system between communities. This was there isn't only one person doing the job of many. Each community would be responsible for raising a mass amount of crops or food. We could help to sustain other communities, while gaining more variety of food at the same time.
Cycles
Carbon Cycle- All living things are apart of the carbon cycle. When carbon is mixed with oxygen in the atmosphere it creates carbon dioxide. This is vital for the process of growth for all plants. This isn't the end for plants. When a plant and animals die the carbon that they hold will then turn into fossil fuels (ex: coal and oil). For humans its a bit different. The fossil fuels that humans produce will be released into the atmosphere in order to trap the heat and keep the earth warm.
Oxygen Cycle- This cycle is interconnected with the carbon cycle. While oxygen is being created through all types of different processes on Earth, this is something very important for all living organisms. Plants are the main producers of oxygen. They create oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. Another natural way that oxygen can be created is through reaction that sunlight has to water vapor in the air.
Nitrogen Cycle- This specific chemical is odorless and colorless and is important to most living organisms. This cycle is the way the nitrogen is able to change into different forms from nature. This includes the atmosphere and the ground. Nitrogen in its pure form is pretty rare because before a living organism uses it, it must be fixed. Another vital part of the cycle is bacteria. Bacteria helps to alter the nitrogen so its in a usable form. Animals get their nitrogen by eating plants for eating other animals that eat plants.

Healthy Growing System
Our group is assigned to one of the aquaponics tanks. The beginning of our growing system started with capturing fish for our system. We got about 5 tilapia from the main tank to put in our smaller system. The system works by transferring the nutrients from the waste our fish create into the plants. It is a continuous cycle of water and nutrients between the fish and plants. The fish get their nutrients from the food and clean water filtered from the plants. For our system we are growing five various types of plants. We started with replanting Kalo that had been previously grown. We had pulled out the individual Kalo and put them together in bunches in order to replant them. The other four plants we are growing right now are Kai Choy, Bell Pepper Kaala, Cauliflower Puakea, and Manoa Sugar which we started from the germination process.
